What questions should you ask when you are choosing a tax preparer? How do you avoid getting scammed? How can you be sure that your preparer is licensed?
These are all important questions.
Verification is easy, and now you can verify a tax professional's licensing and PTIN right on the IRS website. Check this official list of preparers on the IRS website; you can search using their last name. This resource is for taxpayers who want to verify that their preparer has a valid PTIN. This is also a good place for tax professionals to verify that they are on the IRS' current list of preparers.
Taxpayers can refer to this great Forbes Article that includes 12 Questions that Taxpayers Should Ask Their Tax Professional. Happy reading!
Tax Pros: Have you renewed your PTIN? The IRS Return Preparer Office (RPO) is sending out warning letters this month, so make sure your PTIN is renewed and up to date!
According to the IRS, preparer tax identification number (PTIN) applications and renewals for 2016 are still being processed, but anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid 2016 PTIN before preparing returns.
All enrolled agents are required to have a PTIN, whether they file returns for compensation or not.
WARNING! Tax Pros with an Active PTIN, LOOK OUT! There is a new phishing/scam attack that is focused on us tax professionals.
This email just came to us tonight, and the scammer is using the email in our IRS PTIN account to try and scam us. The link in the email takes you to a phishing site that attempts to take your credit card information. See a larger version of the image here.
Please SHARE with other tax pros! Here is an image of the actual email. DO NOT CLICK THE LINK IN THE EMAIL! If you get an email claiming to be from RPO, then go directly to the IRS website and log into your PTIN account that way.
